Since our founding, we have worked with government, for-profit, and nonprofit companies to find solutions to expand access to financing and technical expertise for clean energy deployment. Our clients have included municipal governments, foundations, housing partnerships, labor organizations, and others who are invested in finding scalable solutions to expanding access to green technologies. Urban Ingenuity’s advisory services help develop new policies, programs, and toolkits that make the benefits of the clean energy economy more widely accessible.
As project developers working with affordable housing providers and non-profits, we are acutely aware of the barriers to energy efficiency and clean energy in these sectors, and the policies and programs that can help to mitigate them. In DC, we have been at the forefront of the community solar movement developing several rounds of community-based solar projects through the District’s Solar for All program, and have deployed an additional 10 MW of solar PV affordable housing organizations nationwide. Leveraging this experience, Urban Ingenuity has collaborated with organizations like the Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley Lab and the National Community Solar Partnership to translate our lessons learned into resources for other community members. We continue to inform policy and create resources for community-led solar to provide additional benefits to community organizations as an economic development, community empowerment and wealth building tool. With each project undertaken or challenge met, we hone our expertise.
Working with the District of Columbia government, Urban Ingenuity created and administered the DC PACE program. As the program administrator, Urban Ingenuity structured the first uses of Commercial Property Assessed Clean Energy (C-PACE) financing for affordable housing and the first use of tax-exempt C-PACE for non-profit property owners. We have been invited to advise other municipalities on making C-PACE financing more accessible to these underserved markets, and provided technical assistance to entities like the DC Green Bank on developing a broader suite of tools and products to meet market needs.
